1 Travel to Sendai

Tohoku University

Tohoku University is located in Sendai, the central city in the North Eastern part of Japan. To get to Sendai, you can either fly to Sendai Airport directly, or take a flight to one of the airports in Tokyo and a Japan Railway (JR) bullet train (Shinkansen) to Sendai Station (app. 90 min to 2 hrs. See this map for overview). Sendai International Airport has regular flight connections to and from major East Asian cities (Seoul, Taipei, Beijing, Changchun, Dalian, Shanghai) and many domestic cities (Tokyo-Narita, Osaka, etc.).

Travel to Tokyo

Two International Airports in Tokyo Area

Tokyo has two international airports: Narita International Airport (app. 80 km away from central Tokyo) and Tokyo (Haneda) International Airport (app. 20 km away from central Tokyo). Narita Airport has more international flights at the moment. But Haneda Airport is planning to increase the number of international flights in October 2010. Narita International Airport to central Tokyo

The easiest way to get to central Tokyo from Narita Airport is to take one of the following train services:

  1. Take JR Narita Express (N'EX) to JR Tokyo Station (53 min, 2,940JPY).
    --> Then, take JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai (see below).
  2. Take Keisei Skyliner to Keisei Ueno Station (56 min, 1,920JPY).
    --> Walk to JR Ueno Station (5-10 min), then take JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai (see below).
  3. Take Keisei Skyliner to Keisei Nippori Station (51 min, 1,920JPY).
    --> Walk to JR Nippori Station, which is adjacent to Keisei Nippori Station, take JR Yamanote Line to JR Ueno Station (3 min, 130JPY), then take JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai (see below).
Tokyo (Haneda) International Airport to central Tokyo

It is easy to get to central Tokyo from Haneda Airport by regular train services. You can take either of the following routes:

  1. Take Keikyu Line to Keikyu Shinagawa Station (15 min, 400JPY).
    --> Walk to JR Shinagawa Station, which is adjacent to Keikyu Shinagawa Station, take JR Yamanote Line or JR Keihin Tohoku Line to JR Tokyo Station (10 min, 160JPY), then take JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai (see below).
  2. Take Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station (20 min, 470JPY).
    --> Walk to JR Hamamatsucho Station, which is adjacent to the monorail Hamamatsucho Station, take JR Yamanote Line or JR Keihin Tohoku Line to JR Tokyo Station (5 min, 150JPY), then take JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai (see below).
Central Tokyo to Sendai

JR East runs a bullet train service, called Tohoku Shinkansen, which connects JR Tokyo Station and JR Ueno Station to JR Sendai Station (app. 90 min to 2hrs, 10,000JPY).

2 From Sendai Airport to JR Sendai Station

The most convenient public transportation from Sendai International Airport to JR Sendai Station is Sendai Airport Line. The train takes you to the station in 17 to 25 minutes. The fare is 630 JPY.

3 From JR Sendai Station to the conference site

Take a bus for any of Aoba-dai, Miyakyoo-dai, Narita-san, and Koogaku-bu keiyu Doobutsukooen Junkan at bus stop No. 9 at the bus terminal outside the west entrance of JR Sendai Station and get off at Toohokudai Kawauchi Campus-Hagi Hall Mae or Toohoku Daigaku Nyuushi Center Mae. Alternatively, take a bus for Kootsuu Kooen (Hirose-doori keiyu) at bus stop No. 16 and get off at Kawauchi-Yuubinkyoku Mae.

A taxi can be caught at the west entrance of JR Sendai Station. The fare is about 1,000 JPY.
